  • About the Program:

The Russian Chamber Chorus of New York (RCCNY) presents a program that highlights the richness of Jewish choral tradition through a selection of classical works from Russia, Israel, and the United States to showcase the beauty of Jewish liturgical, secular, and folk traditions, ranging from Bible stories to contemporary compositions paying respect to the depth and breadth of Jewish contributions to the musical world.

Centerpieces include a set of grand, operatic choruses by Modest Mussorgsky, U.S. premiere of the “Prayer of Shmuel Ha Nagid” by a Moscow composer Efrem Podgaits, an example of contemporary composition with extraordinary harmony for women’s voices and cello, as well a choral cycle "Jerusalem Dreams” by Zakhar Blyakher in which the ancient Hebrew “Hallelujah”, King David’s Psalm, a bright picture of a folk celebration of Purim, and a touching Lullaby are combined, conveying a mood of reflection and apprehension with a note of hope for peace for Israel.

  • About Russian Chamber Chorus of New York:

Regarded as one of the world’s greatest ambassadors of the Russian creative spirit, RCCNY’s sound is characterized by the New York Times as “splendid, radiant and sonorous”.

The Russian Chamber Chorus of New York was founded in 1984 by Artistic Director and Conductor Nikolai Kachanov. Known for its stylistic versatility, richness of sound and subtlety of expression, RCCNYcommands a wide repertoire, from ancient liturgical chants to world premieres by leading contemporary composers.

  • About RCCNY’s Artistic Director: 

Founder and Artistic Director of the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York, Nikolai Kachanov was born in Russia in the Siberian city of Barnaul, capital of the Altai Region. He holds a Ph.D. in choral conducting from the Novosibirsk Conservatory and completed post‐doctoral studies at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1981, Maestro Kachanov moved to the United States with his wife, Tamara, and their son Pavel. In 1984, Nikolai and Tamara founded the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. Kachanov brings his unique sensitivity and authentic interpretation to well-known repertoire; at the same time, he is devoted to presenting new and underexposed works that illustrate Russia’s rich heritage and its contemporary spirit.
