  • About the Concert:

Ever get a tune stuck in your head? Meet a tune that has been stuck in composers’ heads for 300 years! A rising star of the new generation of pianist-composers, Matan Porat—Tel Aviv-born and Berlin-based—performs the program of his latest CD, Variations on a Theme by Scarlatti, which the Frankfurter Algemine Zeituing called “a fantastic album that one shoud hear over and over again.”

Porat begins with the theme from Scarlatti’s Sonata in D minor K32, written in 1739. He then performs a steady stream of 24 pieces by composers ranging from Bach to Boulez by way of Chopin and Debussy—all using the same Scarlatti motif. It is a “theme and variations” that covers the entire history of piano composition – all in less than an hour. This is a program that demands immediacy and intimacy.
