  • About the Concert:

German violinist Isabelle Faust, whose sound is described by The New York Times as having “passion, grit and electricity but also a disarming warmth and sweetness,” makes her 92Y debut playing on her 1704 “Sleeping Beauty” Stradivarius (so nicknamed by The Times of London). She is joined by her regular recital partner, Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov, praised for his “wonderful color and imagination” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Their recording of the Beethoven sonatas received a Grammy nomination and won both a Gramophone Award and Germany’s ECHO Klassik Prize, and they have a new release of Brahms sonatas. Together they offer a program of favorite sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms, plus a lush late-Romantic rarity by Busoni.

  • About the Program:

- BEETHOVEN: Violin Sonata in A major, Op. 12, No. 2
- BRAHMS: Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108

- BUSONI: Violin Sonata No. 2 in E minor, Op. 36a

  • About Alexander Melnikov:

ianist Alexander Melnikov is a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory. An early encounter with Svjatoslav Richter led to invitations to festivals in Russia and France. He was awarded prizes at such eminent competitions as the 1989 International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau and the 1991 Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in Brussels.

As a soloist, Mr. Melnikov has performed with orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Philadelphia Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, NHK Symphony, and the BBC, Munich and Rotterdam philharmonics. He has also had a long-standing interest in historically-informed performance practice, and regularly appears with such period ensembles as the Freiburger Barockorchester, Concerto Köln, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and Orchestre des Champs-Élysées. In November 2011 he made his New York solo debut with a recital of works by Schubert, Brahms and Shostakovich at 92Y.

  • About Isabelle Faust:

Ms. Faust is a violinist who performs a wide-ranging repertoire, from Bach to such contemporary composers as Ligeti and Widmann. In addition to her mastery of the great symphonic violin concertos, her versatility extends to her activities as avid recitalist and chamber musician, ranging from Schubert’s Octet on historical instruments to Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments with soprano Anna Prohaska. She has performed in such cities as Berlin, Stuttgart, Paris, Bratislava, Brussels, Zürich, Milan, London, Tokyo and Osaka, as well as throughout the US and Israel.

More recently, her 2016 releases include Haydn’s Violin Concertos with Christopher Poppen and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and Allessandro Rolla: Duets for Violin and Viola with Thomas Riebl. Her recordings of Mozart’s violin concertos with Il Giardino Armonico and Giovanni Antonini, and Bach’s harpsichord sonatas with Kristian Bezuidenhout will be released this season.

Isabelle Faust plays the “Sleeping Beauty” Stradivarius (1704), kindly on loan by the Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg.
