  •  About the Event:

“The muscular grace of Ohlsson’s playing spoke volumes … I found myself mesmerized.”—The Guardian

Viewing paintings in a museum or gallery is usually a silent affair, but two composers from opposite ends of Europe—Spain and Russia—wrote powerful musical works of art inspired by paintings they had seen. Performing them will be the equally powerful and world-renowned piano virtuoso, Garrick Ohlsson.

From Spain comes Granados’ Goyescas, inspired by Goya, who straddled the line between the Old Masters and the new moderns. From Russia comes Mussorgsky’s great Pictures at an Exhibition, an orchestral showpiece that will be heard in its original solo piano arrangement. The “Exhibition” was a selection of paintings by Viktor Hartmann (now remembered chiefly through this work). Only five have survived, and images of these paintings, along with works of Goya, will be on display at the concert. You’ll both see and hear inspiration at work.

Join us for a free pre-concert talk at 1:30 pm with your ticket, about Goya’s and Hartmann’s art, and their relationship to music.

Garrick Ohlsson, piano

GRANADOS: Spanish Dance No. 2, “Oriental”
GRANADOS: Goyescas, Op. 11
MUSSORGSKY: Pictures at an Exhibition

This concert is approximately one hour forty minutes long.
