Art On Brighton 2012 is the 2nd annual multidisciplinary art festival celebrating creative post-Soviet immigrants of Brighton Beach, New York City, and beyond.
During the day, explore the art scene you never knew existed in the Brighton Beach area. Then at 7PM head over to the NY Aquarium for an incredible line-up of performers, including Amour Obscur, The Clox, and Y-Love, as well as drinks, refreshments, and a water-inspired art exhibition.
Afterwards, follow the music out to the Beach for a dance party with NYC’s famous DJ Spinach. Dance amidst fire spinners and the fresh beachside art installation, Brighton Is Cool, Ocean Is Hot.

Saturday, September 8, 2012:
ArtOnBrighton is a multidisciplinary festival taking place on September 8, 2012 at the NY Aquarium and the adjacent beach. Putting the post-Soviet Russian-speaking Jewish immigrants in the spotlight, this celebration recognizes that this is a community of individuals from innumerable walks of life who have themselves or with their families restarted their cultural histories in America and cultivated identities that integrate past, present, and a vibrantly-colored future. Art On Brighton is rooted in past stories, worldly in our interests, recontextualized in the American landscape, hybrid and unlike any breed the former Soviet states and America have seen before.

A large-scale site-specific installation comprised of 36 window air conditioners installed on the sand beach, working in unison. As the sculpture inscribes itself into the maritime landscape, its physical presence and actual social and spatial contexts become dialectical counterparts. Its appearance and deconstructed function, determined by negation, produce a situation of logical discrepancy.
Born in Siberia and spending most of his childhood in Moldova, DJ Spinach organizes some of the best concerts and parties in NYC. His music interests vary from Ska, Reggae and Rocksteady to Surf and Psychobilly, from Swing and Twist to Polka and Gypsy pop. “I love setting the dance floor on fire using my unique mixture of world rhythms,” he says. He holds bi-monthly theme parties called “Swingin’ Penguin” electro swing party and an annual “Starinnije chasi” 80′s Soviet pop party, which attract hundreds of elated party-goers each time. Currently he is launching his own record company: JewFro Records.
