  • About the Performers / More About the Program:

From June 6–11, Alan Gilbert will conduct violinist Lisa Batiashvili in two captivating works. Composed in 1917, the year of the Bolshevik revolution that toppled the Russian Czar, Prokofiev’s stirring Violin Concerto No. 1 inverts the traditional tempo structure of concerto movements so that the more moderate tempi bookend a lightning-quick core. Dallapiccola’s Il Prigioniero (The Prisoner) addresses the weighty issues of freedom and oppression. The one-act opera tells a heartbreaking story of a prisoner during the Spanish Inquisition who gains a taste of freedom, which proves tragically fleeting, through stirring orchestrations. Come prepared to be moved.

- The New York Times has called Il Prigioniero “an intensely dramatic, musically arresting and grimly moving work.”

- Of the audience’s reaction to a recent Brahms performance, The Classical Review reported that violinist Lisa Batiashvili “received a thunderous ovation, one of the longest and most enthusiastic accorded a downtown soloist in recent seasons.”

- The cast of Dallapiccola’s one-act opera includes acclaimed bass-baritone Gerald Finley and soprano Patricia Racette, who, The Times has written, “sang with uncommon richness, expressivity and honesty.”
