Eric Clapton is one of the certified legends of the guitar. But seeing him in concert has become almost impossible — and it always costs a bundle. But you can still enjoy the unforgettable music that he made famous, performed by a pair of artists that are highly regarded in their own right. Spiros Soukis and Hendrik Helmer will be playing “Layla” and other assorted love songs in this special acoustic guitar tribute to Eric Clapton, coming to Cafe Wha? Soukis, a native of Greece, is a well-known blues man, performing regularly at B.B. King’s and other top clubs. Helmer is a guitarist and songwriter accomplished in a variety of musical styles. He’s played with artists such as Carly Simon, Maxwell and Paul Shaffer, and made his Carnegie Hall debut last year.

6) A TRIBUTE TO THE SUPREMES & THE DREAM GIRLS BROADWAY MUSICAL: Sunday, May 22, 2016, 7:30 PM

http://cafewha.com/event.cfm?id=234882&cart May 22

For a singer with such powerful pipes, it’s something of a shock to hear vocalist Emilie Surtees describe herself as primarily a “listener.” Then again, maybe it’s her extraordinary capacity to listen that gives her tribute to The Supremes & The Dream Girls Broadway Musical ;

It’s almost surreal, Emilee’s accuracy, for Surtees not only replicates hit songs, power note for power note, but communicates the soul of each singer who originally recorded them — something that requires not only incredible vocals but also a profound appreciation of music. Be moved and amazed by a tribute artist every bit as talented as the singers she honors in this dynamic concert at Café Wha?.

7) THE MUSIC OF TINA TURNER, TEENA MARIE, AND EARTH WIND AND FIRE: Friday, May 27, 2016, 6:30 PM

A native of Washington D.C., singer songwriter, LaRita Gaskins is going by the artistic ring of her first name “LaRita” to symbolize her artistic continuum in music as not only a singer but a talented virtuous songwriter and music producer.  Her new song, “Funk in De Pocket,” unleashes retro soul with funky prowess… blending a unique sophistication out of R&B to elements of jazz  and a bit of go-go groove.   LaRita’s strong supple alto voice sets the tone for a lyrical content reaching back in time to recapture a charismatic music culture that LaRita continues to possess in her richly inspired musical soul.  She recreates it and makes it uniquely her own.  Her lyrics to ‘Funk in De Pocket,’  start by saying I wanna take you back to the day…" telling a story about a funky town groove.
