IVANOV is the story of a man who struggles to recover his former glory. His wife Anna (of Jewish descent who converted to Russian Orthodox faith) is dying of tuberculosis, but he appears indifferent. He is heavily in debt, but does not know how to resolve his financial troubles. He falls in love with another woman, but his intentions are perceived as driven by greed. Nikolai Ivanov is a quintessentially Russian protagonist who lacks control over his fate.
